Project background
A mid-sized US-based cosmetic company recently approached us to expand its product portfolio in untapped areas or where competition is minimal. The client wants to have a clear understanding of emerging formulation technologies and recent patent filings in the space.
Based on the information provided by the client, we derived a set of objectives that needed to be achieved during our research:
- Identification of high-potential technologies
- The patent activities in the space
- Potential white space areas in the cosmetic, specifically skincare industry
Our Approach
Our team conducted an extensive analysis of technology intelligence and the patent landscape, with a focus on global skincare innovation trends. The study examined patent applications, scientific publications, startup activities, and new product launches across various advanced formulation technologies for skincare.
We categorized innovation areas, identified top assignees, and explored emerging R&D directions within the skincare industry to pinpoint areas with high growth potential and relatively low competition.

Key Insights Identified
The analysis identified several promising technology areas where innovation momentum was growing and yet competition is low. Two particularly notable opportunities were:
- Reverse Emulsion Formulation Systems: These systems showed strong potential to improve the stability and controlled release of sensitive active ingredients in cosmetic products. Patent trends also suggested that research activity is increasing, while still leaving room for companies to develop unique and differentiated products.
- Exosome-Based Skincare Technologies: The research showed rapid growth in using exosomes for regenerative and cell-communication-based skincare applications. Although early-stage innovation was accelerating, the competitive landscape presented substantial opportunities for strategic R&D investment and patent positioning.
Impact for the Client:
Based on these insights, the client was able to prioritize Reverse Emulsion Systems and Exosome-based formulations as key focus areas for their innovation roadmap. The findings supported internal R&D planning, helped identify potential collaboration opportunities, and provided guidance for building a stronger patent portfolio in emerging skincare technologies.
Outcome:
By leveraging technology intelligence and patent landscape insights, the client gained a clear view of high-value innovation white spaces in the skincare industry, enabling them to align their product development strategy with emerging technological trends and long-term market opportunities.
