Abcuro: $66M Series D, 7 patent families, and a thin-but-real moat

Seven families in six years is a small portfolio, and only one of them has granted. That single grant is the interesting part. It is enforceable today, and it sits in one of the busiest claim spaces in biologics, where Regeneron Pharma filed 351 families in the same CPC groups over the last five years. A company with seven families is not out-filing that crowd and does not need to. What matters here is where the claims land, not how many there are. Abcuro’s filings are narrow and specific, aimed at particular indications and a particular target, which is the shape a small portfolio needs to have if it is going to hold ground next to filers a hundred times its size.

The Round

Abcuro raised $66M in a Series D from RA Capital Management, BlackRock and New Enterprise Associates. The company, founded in the United States in 2015, is a biotechnology company developing antibody-based therapies targeting highly cytotoxic T cells involved in autoimmune diseases.

The Portfolio

Seven families since 2019. One granted, six published and pending, and the first of those pending cases could grant at any time. Filings run through Canada, Europe, Korea, the United States and the international route under WO, so the geographic spread is wider than the family count suggests. Velocity has come in bursts rather than a steady drip: one family in 2019, one in 2020, three in 2022, nothing in the intervening years on record, then two in 2025. Claims cluster in peptides and antibodies, the C07K group. The recent filing titles point the same way, covering methods of treating T-cell large granular lymphocytic leukemia, methods of treating inclusion body myositis, and methods of treating disorders associated with excess or unwanted KLRG1 expressing T cells using KLRG1 depleting antibodies. That is a portfolio built around one target and the indications that follow from it.

The Company They Keep

The same CPC groups drew Regeneron Pharma with 351 families, Hoffmann La Roche with 306, Genentech with 271, Janssen Biotech with 261, Amgen with 206 and Novartis with 195 over the last five years. This is a crowded space. In a crowd like that, claim scope carries the weight that filing count cannot. Narrow, well-drafted claims tied to a specific target and specific indications are the practical form of a moat here. On the citation side, Abcuro’s work has been picked up by Brigham & Womens Hospital across five citing publications and by Nat Jewish Health across two. Academic and hospital citation this early suggests the underlying biology is being read and built on by others in the field.

The People

Thirteen inventors are named across the seven families. Stefano Gulla appears on five of the seven, with Kenneth Evan Thompson on four. That is real concentration for a portfolio this size, and it tracks with a single research programme rather than several parallel ones.

What to watch

The pending case closest to grant is the near-term event, and behind it five more published applications working through CA, EP, KR and US. The 2025 filings will publish on the usual eighteen-month clock, which gives the next visible read on where the claims are heading. Hiring points the same direction: thirty open roles, ten in bio and clinical, ten classed as other, five in hardware, four in ops and finance and one in go-to-market. The open positions skew heavily toward CMC purification, cell culture manufacturing, analytical development and QA compliance, which is a manufacturing and quality build-out rather than a new discovery push. Expect further filings in the same claim space.
