Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) in 6G — Patent & Innovation Landscape Analysis Report
A next-generation communications technology for connectivity everywhere
This report explores the emergence of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) in 6G as a next-generation communications technology for enabling ubiquitous, seamless, and resilient connectivity across terrestrial, aerial, and space-based network environments. It examines the technology's foundations, evolving applications, innovation landscape, and intellectual-property activity, providing insights into who is developing these technologies, where innovation is concentrated, and what these trends mean for future research, commercialization, and IP strategy.
The report covers key NTN technologies, including LEO, MEO, and GEO satellite communications, satellite-to-device connectivity, direct-to-device (D2D) communications, terrestrial–non-terrestrial network integration, adaptive beamforming, beam management, satellite handover, inter-satellite links, spectrum sharing, network orchestration, edge computing, AI/ML-based network optimization, and integrated space-air-ground networks. It also examines leading innovators, patent-filing trends, jurisdictions, technology evolution, application areas, competitive dynamics, whitespace opportunities, and the future outlook for communications systems capable of providing continuous connectivity across terrestrial, aerial, maritime, and remote environments.
Built for everyone shaping the 6G non-terrestrial ecosystem
Each audience gets a clear view of the landscape and what to do with it.
From networks anchored to the ground to networks that reach everywhere
Terrestrial cellular networks depend on towers and fiber, which makes coverage costly or impractical across oceans, mountains, deserts, polar regions, and sparsely populated areas, and leaves service exposed when disasters damage ground infrastructure. Non-terrestrial networks bring satellites in low, medium, and geostationary orbits, as well as high-altitude platforms and aerial vehicles, into the cellular architecture, so that ordinary devices can connect wherever they are and the network can stay available when the ground fails. The approach is promising but not without limits: it must manage very high mobility and long link distances, scarce spectrum and interference, the power and size constraints of handsets and satellites, and the complexity of integrating space and ground networks into a single seamless system.
