Description
V2X is a generic term devised to describe use cases like V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle), V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure), V2P (Vehicle-to-Pedestrian), V2D (Vehicle-to-Device), V2N (Vehicle-to-Network), etc. Properly put, V2X enables any vehicle to interact and communicate with other vehicles, roadside entities, pedestrians, and networks with high reliability, low latency, and high throughput. V2X creates collective mobility rather than just autonomy.
To understand the key patent contributions to V2X technology, we calculated the number of patent family declarations made against each V2X specification as well as other specifications containing V2X-specific sections up to March 2022 using the 3GPP official website.
Remarkably, V2X covers a broad set of technologies, like 4G and 5G, and is not limited to V2X alone. Likewise, the V2X-related specifications are not entirely relevant to V2X, as many of the specifications apply to broader technologies as well. Hence, it requires V2X-relevant section consideration.
Frequently asked questions
What does the V2X landscape study examine?
It examines the patent landscape of cellular V2X technology with LTE and 5G standards. The study looks at the companies involved in the filings and at the 3GPP standards involved. V2X is a general term for use cases such as vehicle to vehicle, vehicle to infrastructure, vehicle to pedestrian, vehicle to device and vehicle to network. Together these let a vehicle interact with other vehicles, roadside entities, pedestrians and networks with high reliability, low latency and high throughput.
How were patent contributions to V2X measured?
The number of patent family declarations made against each V2X specification was counted, together with declarations against other specifications that contain V2X specific sections, up to March 2022, using the official 3GPP website as the source. That approach was chosen because V2X spans a broad set of technologies, including 4G and 5G, and is not a self-contained area. Only the V2X relevant sections of those specifications were taken into account.
Why is counting declarations against V2X specifications not straightforward?
V2X covers a broad set of technologies rather than one isolated feature, so its footprint runs through 4G and 5G work as well. The V2X related specifications are not entirely relevant to V2X either, since many of them apply to broader technologies at the same time. Counting every declaration made against those specifications would overstate the position. The study therefore restricts the count to V2X relevant sections, which keeps the resulting picture closer to the technology itself.
Who would use this V2X study and how is it supplied?
It suits automotive and telecoms teams, licensing groups and IP counsel who need to know which companies have declared patent families against V2X specifications, and how cellular V2X sits within LTE and 5G standardisation. The study is available on request through the contact page rather than as an online purchase. Scope can be adjusted, so if you need particular specifications, a different cut-off point, or a closer look at named companies, raise that in your request.
