Overview Description & Analysis

Through AV1 patent filing data, we tracked the innovative advances that have contributed to the development and adoption of AV1. Our analysis leveraged both traditional patent search methodologies and AI-based techniques to retrieve and refine a high-quality dataset. We examined a large corpus of patents and categorized them into three primary areas: video decoding, video encoding, and advanced prediction and transformation-based coding with filtering techniques. Our findings indicate that innovation in AV1-related technologies has accelerated in the period, with several leading technology companies contributing to key developments.

An extensive manual and AI-assisted search of patent databases yielded an initial dataset of approximately 10,000 patents within our areas of interest. Of these, around 30% of the refined subset was identified as AV1-relevant based on a detailed analysis of abstracts, specifications, and claims aligned with AV1 techniques and tools.

The impact of these patents on AV1 is significant, as they support core AV1 video coding mechanisms that enable superior compression efficiency, reduced bandwidth consumption, and enhanced streaming performance. AV1 generally achieves improved compression efficiency, delivering better visual quality at lower bitrates. These advancements benefit a wide range of stakeholders, including streaming platforms, content providers, and telecommunications companies, which rely on AV1 to deliver high-quality video experiences across diverse network conditions.

Leading technology companies and industry participants have contributed to innovations relevant to AV1, reflecting a collaborative and open approach to video encoding, decoding, and predictive-based coding techniques. Key contributors include companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Intel, Apple, Nvidia, Samsung, and Huawei, among others, demonstrating a broad industry commitment to efficient and open video compression technologies.

Although AV1 was officially released in 2018, it continues to evolve through ongoing optimizations and implementation improvements. Enhancements such as improved encoding efficiency and integration with modern streaming technologies have strengthened its adoption across platforms. This continuous development ensures that AV1 remains adaptable and capable of meeting the growing demands of high-resolution video streaming across diverse network environments.

Patent filings in this area were relatively limited prior to 2015 but began to rise notably from 2017 onwards, coinciding with broader advancements in next-generation video compression technologies and the early development of AV1. The growth in filings during this period reflects increasing research activity focused on improving coding efficiency, scalability, and decoding performance within emerging open video standards. We analyzed the unique AV1-related patent families and identified their top assignees and assignee types, along with patent counts and filing trends across different technologies.
