The Problem

Our client was developing Lithium Hydroxide Processing Technology (ELi) and sought to analyse its future competitive advantage in the market. They needed a thorough assessment addressing all facets of that technology.

Our client contacted us to perform a detailed third-party study and compile a comprehensive report outlining its competitive edge over rivals. We had four weeks to finish this project and deliver the final report.

HOW WE SOLVED IT

We calculated the competitive advantage score using four parameters. A higher score indicates a stronger tailwind for the company. Each factor was rated from 0 to 5, where 0 represents maximum headwind and 5 signifies maximum tailwind. We analysed the technology’s key features and built a strategy to make an actionable report.

   1. Technical Analysis: We scored the competitive advantage based on various factors under technical analysis. These factors include the stage of evolution, the presence of alternate or competing technologies, and the impact of the technology, among others. As similar technology was found to exist but at a developing stage, we found the TRL of our client’s technology ahead than the other technologies.

2. IP Analysis: We prepared the IP landscape for the technology. Comprehensive research on prior art was conducted, and competitors’ activities in a similar domain were analyzed. More than 150 patents were reviewed, which revealed very limited opportunities to secure a patent in a similar technology domain. Acute FTO issues were flagged for certain countries, and patentability issues were noted. After careful examination of the IP landscape, we scored 2.2 out of 5.

3. Market Analysis: We estimated the technology’s market potential based on several factors. The market vertical was determined, and competitors operating in the same technology area were shortlisted. Scoring was based on factors such as market size, market growth, and regulatory drivers within the technological domain. The company received a score of 3 out of 5 for market analysis.

4. Competitor Analysis: We identified the major competitors that directly align with the technology and assessed their threat. Scoring was based on various factors, including investments, partnerships, and M&A activities by competitors in similar technology domains. The company scored 3 out of 5.

Overall, the company has scored 3 out of 5, indicating a slight tailwind concerning the development and commercialisation of ELi technology.
