MU-MIMO Wi-Fi 6 Essentiality Report
Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) is a wireless communication technology that allows multiple devices to communicate with an access point (AP) simultaneously using the same frequency band. By utilizing multiple antennas at both the transmitter (AP) and receiver (devices), MU-MIMO divides the available bandwidth into spatial streams, enabling efficient and simultaneous data transmission to multiple users.
This report presents an analysis of the patent landscape related to MU-MIMO technology. To identify patents relevant to MU-MIMO, comprehensive searches were performed across multiple patent databases using a combination of search strings, IPC/CPC classifications, and MU-MIMO-specific keywords. Keywords associated with MU-MIMO in the context of Wi-Fi 6 such as Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output, Beamforming, Spatial streams, Channel State Information, Spatial multiplexing, Uplink and Downlink MU-MIMO, and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access were employed. Since the Wi-Fi 6 standard was launched in 2021, the search focused exclusively on patents with a priority date of February 2021.
MU-MIMO is a critical feature in Wi-Fi 6 that significantly enhances network performance by allowing multiple devices to communicate with an AP simultaneously. Unlike Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), which primarily supports downlink MU-MIMO, Wi-Fi 6 introduces support for both uplink and downlink MU-MIMO, enabling efficient two-way communication.
With the ability to handle up to eight spatial streams, Wi-Fi 6 can allocate streams across multiple devices, improving throughput and reducing latency, especially in dense environments like offices, stadiums, or homes with numerous connected devices.

This process included analyzing the claims, abstracts, and detailed descriptions within the patent documents to assess their relevance. Patents that demonstrated a clear connection to Wi-Fi 6 and MU-MIMO were selected for further consideration.

To determine the essentiality of a patent, each claim is compared to the Wi-Fi 6 standard to identify whether all the claim's elements are present in the standard. If every element of the claim aligns with the Wi-Fi 6 specifications, the patent is considered essential.
The filing trend for Wi-Fi 6 MU-MIMO patents reveals significant variations over the years. The initial activity in 2013 accounted for less than 1% of the total filings. This was followed by a rise in 2014, contributing 6% of the total.
