Introduction

Using quantum systems to model quantum chemistry

Molecules behave according to quantum mechanics, and accurately simulating that behavior is very hard for classical computers, so conventional drug-discovery methods rely on approximations. Quantum simulation uses quantum computers, often alongside classical and AI methods, to model molecular electronic structure and interactions more directly. The technology is still maturing and the hardware has limits today, but it is advancing quickly, and pharma, quantum hardware makers, and investors are all positioning themselves for what it may enable.

Challenges addressed

Limits of conventional computational drug discovery

Where quantum simulation aims to help, and where it still has to prove itself.

01
Approximations in classical methods
Classical computers cannot exactly simulate many quantum effects in molecules, so models rely on shortcuts
02
Hard-to-model chemistry
Systems with strong electron correlation, such as certain reactions and metal-containing sites, remain difficult
03
Prediction accuracy and attrition
More accurate molecular predictions could help reduce costly late-stage failures in discovery
04
Immature hardware and uncertain timelines
Today's quantum devices are limited by noise and scale, so practical advantage over classical methods is still being established
Applications

Where quantum simulation could create value

Steps in drug discovery that depend on accurate molecular modeling.

Small-molecule drug design
Protein–ligand binding
Reaction and mechanism modeling
