Gravis Robotics: $200M Series A, 3 patent families, and a thin-but-real moat
The most striking fact in the file is the gap between capital and public paper. Gravis Robotics raised $200M against three patent families, all filed in a single burst in 2024, none granted yet. The last public filing predates this round by 22 months. That is not a hole. It is a publication lag. Anything filed since October 2024 is still inside the 18-month window, and in a company hiring at this rate, the odds favor more filings sitting unpublished. What is visible today is a small, focused, early portfolio in a busy field. What matters next is scope, not count.
The Round
Gravis Robotics, founded in Switzerland in 2022, raised a $200M Series A from Pear VC, IQ Capital and SoftBank. The company develops autonomous technology that retrofits construction machines for earthmoving and excavation tasks.
The Portfolio
Three families, all filed in 2024, all published and pending, none granted. Filing velocity by year is simple: three in 2024, then a public silence that reflects the publication window rather than a decision to stop. Filings sit in EP and WO, so the family structure is built for national phase entry rather than a single home market. First grants are expected around 2027. Claims cluster in G05B and in robots and manipulators, B25J. The published titles point the same direction: methods, systems, and computer program products for controlling autonomous material handling machines; autonomous excavation based on a control policy trained with reinforcement learning under depth constraints; and a universal control policy for machine actuators. Three filings, one theme. The claim space is learned control policy for heavy machine actuators, and all three families push on it from different angles. That coherence is worth more at this stage than breadth would be.
The Company They Keep
The same CPC groups drew Fanuc with 592 families over five years, Harbin Inst with 386, Caterpillar with 338, Zhejiang University with 326, Komatsu Mfg with 298 and Bosch Robert with 254. This is a crowded space with large industrial and academic filers in it. In a field this dense, three families only work if the claims are narrow and specific, and the depth-constrained reinforcement learning framing in the second filing reads like exactly that sort of specificity. Scope will decide the value of this portfolio, not volume. On the other side, Electronic Sci & Tech China University has already cited the Gravis filings once. One citation from one academic assignee, this early, is a small signal that the work is being read in the right technical neighborhood.
The People
Four inventors are named across three families. Pascal Egli appears on two of the three, and Fang Nan also on two, with Filippo Spinelli on one. That is heavy concentration in two people. Common at this stage, and it matches a company that filed everything in one year around one technical idea.
What to watch
First grants are expected around 2027, and nothing is enforceable until then. The nearer signal is the publication window: filings made after October 2024 begin surfacing on a rolling basis, and that is where the effect of the round on filing rate will first become visible. Hiring supports the same read. Gravis is recruiting for 83 roles, 35 in software and AI, 30 in hardware, 12 other, 5 in ops and finance and 1 in go-to-market. Open roles include Senior Embedded Linux Engineer, Technical Program Manager, Network Systems Engineer and Senior Mechanical Engineer. That is an engineering build, not a commercial one, and it lines up with the existing claim space rather than pointing away from it. Expect more of the same subject matter.
