Stage one

Nineteen million, and a nine-year paper trail

Ampaire closed a $19M Series B from Elemental Impact, 8090 Industries and Techstars. The company was founded in 2016. That gap matters more than the number does, because the filing record behind the round starts in the founding year and runs without a break to October 2024. Nine consecutive years of first filings is not a common pattern for a company of this size, and it is the first thing worth checking against the money.

What the round buys is a question for the company. What the round sits on is a question with a public answer. Seventeen patent families, filed at the European Patent Office, in the United States and through the international route. Thirteen of them are granted. The remaining four are published and pending, and the earliest of those is far enough along that grant could come at any time.

Stage two

Thirteen solid ticks, four still thin

Seventeen families is a small portfolio by any absolute measure. The ratio inside it is not small. Thirteen of seventeen have issued, which means the majority of what Ampaire has claimed is already granted and enforceable rather than sitting in examination. Companies that file fast and grant slowly look busier than they are. This is the opposite shape: a modest count where most of the count has already survived an examiner.

The four pending families are the recent end of the arc. They include the parallel hybrid thrust control work and the lightweight structural vented battery system, plus the in-air tow attachment method for extending the range of a payload aircraft. That last one reads like a different company wrote it. Hold that thought, because the classification data suggests it is not an outlier so much as a corner of a wider claim space.

Six flat years, then a fourfold jump

Toyota, 1,833. Samsung SDI, 1,765. Contemporary Amperex, 1,613. Ningde Amperex, 882. Against that scale, seventeen is a rounding error and the circle is barely visible.

Count is the wrong comparison. The large filers are in H01M because cells are their business; almost none of that work touches B64C. Ampaire sits where the two classifications overlap, and a vented battery structure specified for an aircraft is not the same claim as a vented battery structure for a car, however similar the drawings look. In a crowded classification, the scope of what you claimed is the only thing that separates you from the volume around you.

Who reads these, and what they build

The citations do not come from the battery giants. They come from aviation. Archer Aviation cites this portfolio across ten publications. Pratt & Whitney Canada, seven. Beta Air, six. Joby Aero, five. GE Aviation Systems, four. Five organisations building electrified flight, all of them examining or referencing the same small body of work, which is a reasonable indicator that the claims landed on problems the field actually has.

Twenty inventors are named across the seventeen families. Jeffrey Spitzer appears on six, Cory Michael Combs on four, Lind Damon Vander on four. That is a concentrated core with a broad supporting bench, and it matches the open roles: certification engineering, electrified propulsion drives, experimental aircraft maintenance. The people filing and the people being hired are working on the same thing.

Stage six

A narrow claim in a wide field

Here is the plain version. Ampaire spent six years filing one family a year, which is what a company does when it is building rather than positioning. Then from 2021 it filed eleven more in four years. Thirteen of the total are granted. They sit at the junction of two classifications, one dominated by cell manufacturers and one populated by aircraft makers, and the aviation side is the side that cites them.

So the moat is not the seventeen. It is the priority dates on the early ones, the grant rate on all of them, and the fact that the claims occupy an intersection the volume filers have no reason to enter. The twenty-two month unpublished window means the current state of that position is not yet visible to anyone outside the company.
