Five Families, One Name On All Of Them, And Dyne Therapeutics Reading Closely

AusperBio holds 5 patent families: 1 granted and 4 published and pending. Filing began in 2023, with the most recent published filing dated 2025-05-22. The families appear in 5 patent offices: Australia, Israel, Mexico, United States and PCT.Patent figures from Google Patents Public Data, reviewed 2026-09-14. Funding: $120M Series C, RA Capital Management, Qiming Venture Partners and CDH Investments, 2026-08-27.

AusperBio raised $120M in a Series C on the strength of a hepatitis B program. Behind it sits a portfolio of five patent families, one granted. The interesting part is not the count. It is who has already cited them, and who signed the filings.

Stage one

The money arrives four years after founding

AusperBio was founded in 2019 in the United States. The $120M Series C came from RA Capital Management, Qiming Venture Partners and CDH Investments. That is a specialist crossover fund alongside two China-linked growth investors, which tells you something about where the clinical work and the market are both expected to sit.

A single pulse of capital that size implies a thesis already tested. The company says it develops drugs for curing chronic hepatitis B and other major infectious diseases. The filings begin in 2023. So the patent record and the money are near-contemporaneous, which is unusual. Most portfolios worth funding have a longer quiet period behind them. This one does not.

Stage two

One granted ribbon, four still open

Five families since 2023. Filing velocity ran two, two, then one: 2023, 2024, 2025. Coverage across AU, IL, MX, US and WO. That is a deliberate, small, internationally staged set rather than a spray.

One family is granted. Four are published and pending, and the first of those could issue at any time. The granted family is enforceable today. The wide pending band is the part that has not yet been tested against an examiner's final view, and in a space this busy, the scope those four come out with matters more than the fact they exist. The latest titles run to modified multi-segmented antisense oligonucleotides and combination treatments.

A portfolio of five is not a wall. It is a bet on where the wall should go.

Stage three

Cheng Yong Yang signed every single one

Five inventors are named across the whole portfolio. Cheng Yong Yang appears on five of five. Guofeng Cheng also appears on five, with Guo-Feng Cheng recorded separately on two, which looks like the same person entered two ways.

So the inventive record narrows to essentially two people. Every family runs through them. That is concentration, and concentration cuts both ways: the technical thesis is coherent, consistently authored, and clearly not assembled from acquired odds and ends. It also means the institutional memory of why each claim was drafted the way it was sits with a very small number of people.

Stage four

A small circle among very large ones

The same CPC groups, enzymes and cells and genetic engineering under C12N and medicinal preparations under A61K, drew University of California with 508 families in five years. Jiangnan University filed 369. Huazhong Agricultural University 325, China Agricultural University 312, Zhejiang University 279, University of Pennsylvania 271.

AusperBio has five. On a shared scale that is a dot beside spheres. But most of that volume is academic and spread across agriculture, food science and general genetic tooling. Count is the wrong measure here. What matters is whether the five sit somewhere specific enough that the 508 do not reach it. A same-week neighbour in C12N15 was Airway Therapeutics, which gives a sense of how ordinary the shelf is.

Stage five

Who has already read the file

Dyne Therapeutics cites AusperBio across 20 publications. Biontech Se cites it in four. Heidelberg Biotech in three, Glaxosmithkline Ip Dev in two, and Glaxosmithkline Intellectual Property No 3 in two more.

Twenty citations from one oligonucleotide developer is not incidental. Citation is prior art acknowledgement: it means that when serious parties drafted in this area, these five families were on the map they had to draw around. A portfolio this young being referenced this often by companies this large is the strongest single signal in the file. The crowd chart says small. The citation chart says load-bearing.

Five families that four major developers have had to write around are not five ordinary families.

Stage six

What the next grant actually decides

Hiring lines up with the filings: 13 open roles, 12 in bio and clinical, one in software or AI. Toxicology, clinical QC, clinical operations, pharmacology. This is a company moving a program through development, not pivoting. Expect more filings in the same claim space.

So the position is narrow, concentrated in two inventors, one grant deep, and already cited by Dyne Therapeutics, Biontech Se and two Glaxosmithkline entities. The pending family closest to issue is the hinge. If it grants near the scope it was published at, the enforceable base doubles in a space where four large developers have already had to account for it.

A diagram building through 6 stages: the funding event, drawn as a single pulse with the amount; the record splitting into a narrow granted ribbon and a wide pending one, so the skew is visible; the inventors as dots, with the most frequently named highlighted; the big filers in the same CPC groups as large circles, with this company as a small one on the same scale; the citing organizations as nodes connected back to the portfolio; the closing question, set large in italic, with the earlier stages dimmed behind it. $120M Series C, 2026-08-27 RA Capital Management and Qiming Venture Partners AusperBio, founded 2019, United States 5 patent families 1 granted 4 pending 20% of the record is issued 5 inventors named across the portfolio Cheng Yong Yang is named on 5 of 5 Guofeng Cheng is named on 5 of 5 Guo-Feng Cheng is named on 2 of 5 Inventor names do not establish ownership Filers in the same CPC groups, last five years University of C… 508 Jiangnan Univer… 369 Huazhong Agricu… 325 China Agricultu… 312 AusperBio 5 Shared classification indicates a common field, not a direct competitor Organizations citing the portfolio AusperBio Dyne Therapeutics 20 citing Biontech Se 4 citing Heidelberg Biotech 3 citing Glaxosmithkline Ip Dev 2 citing A citation is a reference to the work, not evidence of commercial use Does one grant plus twenty citations from a larger developer make five families a moat?

Is a five-family portfolio ever enough?

Small portfolios can hold or evaporate, and the count never tells you which. Three signals below each say something partial. Any one on its own is consistent with both outcomes. Read them against each other.

Where this sits

Filings without corroboration

Five families, none granted, no external citation and no hiring signal would leave the portfolio unproven in either direction.

What the next grant actually decides

What scope survives when the pending antisense family issues, and how much narrower is it than the published claims?

Will the 2025 filing rate recover, or was the two-two-one pattern the whole intended set?

Does Dyne Therapeutics' citation pattern continue into its later filings, or was it concentrated in one drafting window?

Do any future families name inventors beyond Cheng Yong Yang and Guofeng Cheng?

Together those four would tell you whether AusperBio is building a claim position or simply documenting one program.

Common questions

How many patents does AusperBio have?

AusperBio holds 5 patent families as reviewed in 2026-09: 1 granted and 4 published and pending.

How many of AusperBio's patents are granted?

1 of the 5 families is granted, or 20 percent. The remaining 4 are published and still under examination.

What technology do AusperBio's patents cover?

AusperBio's claims cluster in enzymes, cells and genetic engineering (C12N), medicinal preparations (A61K) and therapeutic activity (A61P). Recent filing titles include "oligonucleotides for use in modulating immune responses against hepatitis b viral infection" and "modified multi-segmented antisense oligonucleotides for use".

Where has AusperBio filed patents?

AusperBio's families appear in 5 patent offices: Australia, Israel, Mexico, United States and PCT.

Which companies file patents in the same areas as AusperBio?

The same CPC groups drew University of California, Jiangnan University, Huazhong Agricultural University and China Agricultural University over the last five years. Shared classification indicates a common technology field rather than direct competition.

Who cites AusperBio's patents?

Patent records from Dyne Therapeutics, Biontech Se, Heidelberg Biotech and Glaxosmithkline Ip Dev cite AusperBio's filings. A citation indicates a reference to the work, not evidence of commercial use.

Who invented AusperBio's patents?

5 inventors are named across the portfolio. The most frequently named is Cheng Yong Yang. Inventor names do not establish ownership, which is determined by assignment records.
