TECLens has been filing on corneal crosslinking since 2014. Six families are granted. One inventor is named on ten of eleven. The Series A landed in a year with no public filings behind it. So what does the record actually show, and where does it stop?
The money came last, not first
A $10M Series A from Johnson & Johnson Innovation, Sunmed Capital and Yonjin Venture. That is the visible event. Behind it sits a decade of quieter activity: TECLens was founded in 2013 and filed its first family in 2014. The round is the newest fact in the file and one of the least informative. Everything that makes it interesting was already on the public record years before the term sheet.
Note the gap. The last public filing is dated 2024-01-12, thirty-one months before this round closed. Anything filed since then is still inside the eighteen-month publication window and cannot be seen. Read the names again. Fibre optics, semiconductors, network hardware. These are classification neighbours, not commercial ones. The same-week filing neighbour in the shared group was Quintessent, in G02B6, which is optical waveguides. Crowding by count and crowding by contest are different measurements. When the traffic in a group comes from companies solving a different problem with the same physics, what matters is claim scope, not headcount.

Who actually reads these filings
The citation graph draws a different map than the crowd chart. Acucela cites the portfolio across 37 publications. Cxl Ophthalmics 36. Hartman Brad 18. Columbia University 17. Avedro 12. Every one of those is in ophthalmics or corneal crosslinking. None of them is a fibre optics company. This is the room TECLens is actually standing in, and it is a small, specific, well-informed one.
That is the whole point. The big filers share a classification code; the citing organisations share a problem. Five separate parties working on the cornea have found these documents worth pointing at, some of them repeatedly across dozens of filings. Six of the eleven families are granted, which makes them live positions rather than pending ones, and the people most likely to encounter them have already read them.
What the hiring plan does not match
One loose thread runs through all of it. Of seventeen open roles, nine are hardware, five are bio or clinical, two are other and one is software or AI. The filings lean biological: corneal crosslinking, myopia control, presbyopia. The latest titles include an ultrasonic lens and transducer system, which is the hardware end. Sample roles include a consulting optometrist for scleral lenses and a senior medical device engineer.
A company that files in biology and hires in hardware is usually building the delivery instrument for what it has already claimed, or building the next thing entirely. The public record cannot distinguish those two cases yet, because the last visible filing predates the round by thirty-one months. The moat is real, granted, and narrow in exactly the right way.
