Three names carry almost the whole Therabody file

Therabody holds 130 patent families: 110 granted and 20 published and pending. Filing began in 2017, with the most recent published filing dated 2025-11-18. The families appear in 8 patent offices: United States, Europe, China, Japan and South Korea.Patent figures from Google Patents Public Data, reviewed 2026-09-17. Funding: $165M round, 2022-09-01.

Therabody announced $165M in September 2022. By then its heaviest filing year was already underway, and had been building since 2020. The record shows who was doing the building: of 99 named inventors, three appear on nearly every family. This is what that concentration looks like.

Stage one

The money lands on an existing crest

September 2022. A $165M round, announced as a single event. It reads, from outside, like the moment a company gains the means to invent. Held against Therabody's own filing record, it reads differently. By the month of the announcement the company had been filing at high volume for three straight years, and 2022 would close as its heaviest year on record. The capital did not start anything.

The first filing is dated 22 March 2017. For three years after that the record is almost silent: one family, then two, then two. Whatever was built in that period was built small. The 130 families now on file, 110 of them granted, were overwhelmingly begun after 2019 and mostly before the round. That sequence is the whole reason this piece exists.

The capital arrived at the crest, not before it.

Stage two

One hundred and ten already through

Split the record by status and it is lopsided. 110 of the 130 families are granted. 20 remain published and pending. Eighty-five percent through is a high figure for a company whose first filing is dated 2017, and it tells you the claims here have mostly been examined rather than merely asserted. The wide ribbon is settled ground. The narrow one is everything still in motion.

A grant rate that high also means the pending side carries less of the story than usual. There is not a large speculative tail waiting to redefine what this company holds. What Therabody has, it largely already has, tested and issued across eight patent offices including the US, EP, CN, JP and KR. The interesting question moves from what might be granted to who wrote it.

Stage three

Four years of climb, then a shaded edge

One family in 2017. Two in 2018. Two in 2019. Then 21 in 2020, 29 in 2021, and 44 in 2022. The step from two to twenty-one is the real event in this record, and it happens two years before the funding marker. Filing volume multiplied tenfold while the company was, on the evidence of the record alone, doing this without the round that later drew the headlines.

After the peak the bars fall: 21 in 2023, 6 in 2024, 4 in 2025. Read the last two with care. Filings publish on a delay, and the most recent published filing here is dated 18 November 2025, so the right-hand edge is necessarily incomplete. The 2023 drop to 21 is past the delay and real. The rest is not yet readable.

Stage four

Ninety-nine dots, three that matter

Ninety-nine people are named as inventors across the file. The distribution is not remotely even. EDUARDO MERINO appears on 92 families. JAIME SANCHEZ SOLANA appears on 92. BENJAMIN NAZARIAN appears on 85. Against a total of 130, that means roughly seven of every ten families carry at least two of the same three names, through the silent years, through the 2022 peak, and out the other side.

That is unusual at this scale. A 130-family record built by a large engineering organisation normally fragments into teams, each with its own cluster of names and its own subject matter. Here it does not fragment. The recent published titles sit close together too: massage appliances, and articles of footwear having therapeutic assemblies. Consistent authorship, consistent subject. The concentration is the structure.

Two names appear on 92 of 130 families each.

Stage five

Who points back at this work

Four organisations cite these filings with any frequency. MERCHSOURCE LLC accounts for 29 citations. HYDRAFACIAL LLC accounts for 17. PLAYMAKAR INC accounts for 15. SICHUAN QIANLI BEOKA MEDICAL TECH INC accounts for 10. Citations are not claims and prove nothing about anyone's business. What they do show is that examiners and applicants elsewhere keep arriving at this same body of work when they search.

Seventy-one citations from four names is a narrow, repeated pattern rather than diffuse background noise. It suggests the 2020 to 2022 families landed somewhere that others have since had to file through. For a record authored so consistently by three people, that outside attention is the clearest independent signal that the timing was early rather than merely busy.

Stage six

What the sequence actually proves

Set the dates next to each other and the plain version is this. Therabody filed one family in 2017 and 44 in 2022. The climb began in 2020. The $165M was announced in September 2022, into a filing year already at its peak. Eighty-five percent of the resulting families are granted, and three people are named on almost all of them. Conviction preceded capital by two years.

That is a specific kind of moat. Not breadth of headcount, and not a large pending tail promising future scope, but a settled, examined record written by a small and unchanging group, filed across eight offices before the money made it obvious. The open part is what happens to that concentration now, on the shaded edge of the chart where the record cannot yet be read.

A diagram building through 6 stages: the funding event, drawn as a single pulse with the amount; the record splitting into a narrow granted ribbon and a wide pending one, so the skew is visible; families by first filing year as bars, with the funding year marked and the unpublished window shaded; the inventors as dots, with the most frequently named highlighted; the citing organizations as nodes connected back to the portfolio; the closing question, set large in italic, with the earlier stages dimmed behind it. $165M round, 2022-09-01 Therabody, United States 130 patent families 110 granted 20 pending 85% of the record is issued Families by first filing year not fully published the round 1 2 2 21 29 44 21 6 4 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 99 inventors named across the portfolio MERINO EDUARDO is named on 92 of 130 SOLANA JAIME SANCHEZ is named on 92 of 130 NAZARIAN BENJAMIN is named on 85 of 130 Inventor names do not establish ownership Organizations citing the portfolio Therabody MERCHSOURCE LLC 29 citing HYDRAFACIAL LLC 17 citing PLAYMAKAR INC 15 citing SICHUAN QIANLI BEOKA MEDI… 10 citing A citation is a reference to the work, not evidence of commercial use Did the money follow the conviction, and does the conviction still show up?

Is the early conviction still operating here?

Three readable signals sit in this record. None settles the question alone, because a high grant rate can reflect old work, and a filing peak can reflect a single year of unusual effort rather than a durable habit.

Where this sits

Volume without a thread

A count of 130 families would say only that filings were made. Nothing in it would tell you when the belief formed or who held it.

What the sequence actually proves

Do the 2024 and 2025 cohorts, once fully published, recover toward the 2020 to 2022 volumes or confirm the 2023 step down?

Do MERINO, SOLANA and NAZARIAN remain named on filings dated after 2023, or does authorship begin to spread across the other 96 inventors?

Does the 85 percent grant rate hold as the 20 pending families are examined?

Do the four citing organisations keep pointing at the 2020 to 2022 families, or at the newer ones?

Following those four would tell you whether the concentration that built this record in 2020 is still the thing producing it, or whether 2022 was the high-water mark of a particular three people working at a particular moment.
