Wi-Fi 7 Patent Landscape Report

The purpose of this report is to conduct an independent, non-commissioned study on Wi-Fi 7 technology and provide a third-party assessment to various stakeholders.

Our dataset was constructed using patents declared under LoAs and a combination of keywords, CPCs, citations, and other factors. Only active granted patents were further considered for landscape evaluation.

The report provides a comprehensive overview of the patent landscape for Wi-Fi 7 technology, offering in-depth insights into its key features, top assignees, and filing trend. The report aims to identify all granted patents worldwide related to Wi-Fi 7 technology. The report identifies top assignees, technology domains, geographical distribution of the patents, and examines the reassignment history of all patents.

Who will benefit:

  1. SEP Holders: To know leading assignees, portfolio understanding, and crafting licensing strategies.
  2. SEP Implementers:  To know potential threats, FTO issues, and strategize licensing negotiations.
  3. Patent Monetization Firms: Discover assignees and their relevant portfolios for monetization purposes.
  4. Law Firms:  To build litigation strategies for assertion or defence purposes.
  5. Patent Pools: Discover potential licensors to join their pool.
  6. AI Software Firms: To train their AI models with our comprehensive datasets.

What you’ll get:

Landscape study of 2000+ Wi-Fi 7 relevant patent families.
Technology distribution, filing trend, and list of assignees having Wi-Fi 7 related patents.
Number of patents per assignee.

We employed a three-phase approach to conduct this detailed study.

Phase 1

A comprehensive dataset of active, granted worldwide patents was built by covering the newly added features of the Wi-Fi 7 standard. Based on several publicly available reports,  we identified the following features as new additions in 802.11be compared to the previous standard, 802.11ax:

  1. 4096-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation)
  2. OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access)
  3. MU-MIMO (Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output
  4. MLO (Multi-Link Operation)
  5. 320 MHz Channel Bandwidth
  6. Beamforming Enhancements
  7. Multi-AP (Access Point) Coordination
  8. TWT (Target Wake Time) and R-TWT (Restricted Target Wake Time)
  9. TSN (Time-Sensitive Networking)
  10. BSS Color (Basic Service Set Coloring)
  11. AFC (Automated Frequency Coordination)
  12. TSF (Timing Synchronization Function)
  13. EHT (Extremely High Throughput)
  14. EDMG (Enhanced Directional Multi-Gigabit)
  15. QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation)
  16. CFO (Carrier Frequency Offset) Compensation
  17. WUR (Wake-Up Radio)

A two-step approach was followed during Phase 1 to create a comprehensive patent dataset:

Step 1: Extract all patents listed under LoAs declared.

Step 2: Identify patent families using combinations of keywords, CPCs, assignees, and citations, with a focus on the newly added features.

After combining all results, we compiled a list of over 3,000 patent families.

We recognised the terminology similarities between 6G and Wi-Fi 7 technologies; therefore, we expected a substantial number of telecom patents to be captured in Step 3.

Phase 2

We focused on identifying patents unrelated to the Wi-Fi 7 technology domain. An analysis of the title, abstract, and claims of each patent was conducted to identify patents with limitations related to telecommunications terminology or concepts, such as LTE, UMTS, PDCCH, PDSCH, and similar. Such patents were removed from our list. However, patents written with broad terminology or concepts applicable to both telecom and Wi-Fi 7 technologies were considered for further analysis.

After removing irrelevant patents, the refined list comprised over 2,000 patent families.

Phase 3

Categorisation of all patents was performed based on newly added features, including 4096 QAM, MU-MIMO, EHT, OFDMA, and WUR, among others.

We have prepared a comprehensive interactive dashboard to give a holistic overview of all essential patents in the Wi-Fi 7 technology domain.
