This report presents a comprehensive essentiality analysis of SK Telecom’s patent portfolio with respect to the HEVC/H.265 standard. The analysis covered key technological areas, including Block-based, Predictive Coding, Transformation & Quantization, Multi-layer, and Filtering.

We have identified 62 active granted patents for SK Telecom that are related to HEVC technology.

Each patent was evaluated by manually mapping its independent claim elements to relevant sections of the standard to determine alignment. This detailed mapping highlights SK Telecom’s significant contributions to HEVC and highlights the relevance of its innovations in enabling high-efficiency video coding.

What you’ll get:

  • Essentiality analysis of SK Telecom's patent portfolio

  • Relevant independent claim

  • Target entity of independent claim

  • Patents that are potentially essential to HEVC standard

  • Patents that are potentially non-essential to HEVC standard

Description

To identify relevant patents, comprehensive searches were conducted across multiple patent databases using a combination of search strings, IPC/CPC classifications, and HEVC–specific keywords.

To determine the essentiality of a patent, each claim is compared to the H.265 standard to identify whether the patented claim’s elements are present in the standard. Essentiality is checked with respect to all versions of HEVC, respectively, as improvements have been gradually implemented to address evolving technological demands in HEVC.

Patented claim is compared to the standard, and if every element of the claim aligns with the H.265 specifications, the patent is considered essential. On the other hand, if any element is not present or there is a contradiction between the claim and the standard (e.g., conflicting requirements or descriptions), the patent is considered non-essential. This manual evaluation process ensures that only patents fully aligned with the H.265 standard’s requirements are classified as essential.

Frequently asked questions

What does this report cover about SK Telecom’s HEVC patents?
It covers an essentiality analysis of SK Telecom’s patent portfolio against the HEVC/H.265 standard. The study identified 62 active granted patents held by SK Telecom that relate to HEVC technology. The technical areas examined are block based coding, predictive coding, transformation and quantization, multi-layer coding, and filtering. Each patent was assessed by mapping the elements of its independent claims to the relevant sections of the standard, which shows where the filings meet the specification.

How is essentiality decided for each patent?
Each claim is compared with the H.265 standard to see whether the elements of the claim appear in it. When every element aligns with the specification, the patent is treated as essential. When an element is absent, or the claim contradicts the standard through conflicting requirements or descriptions, the patent is treated as non-essential. The check is made against all versions of HEVC, since the standard has been improved in stages to meet changing technical demands.

What decisions does this report support?
It supports licensing and portfolio decisions in video coding. Typical uses include preparing for licence discussions, valuing or benchmarking a portfolio, assessing pool participation, and diligence before an acquisition. Engineering and standards teams read it to see which parts of H.265 a single filer has concentrated on. Because each finding is tied to a claim and a section of the standard, your own counsel can retrace the reasoning before relying on it.

How is the report supplied?
On request through the contact page on the website. There is no online cart and no instant download, so a request opens a short conversation about the scope you need. The study can be adjusted, for example by focusing on one technical area, by extending the analysis to further patents in the same families, or by delivering the claim to standard mapping in a claim chart format suited to your internal review.
