Do You Know: Who is Innovating in Telepresence Technology?

Telepresence is a technology that allows a person to feel or appear as if they are present at a location different from their physical location. It enables real-time interaction with remote environments and people through the use of audiovisual and sometimes tactile (touch) interfaces.

The goal of telepresence is to simulate the experience of being physically present in a remote space. Telepresence seeks to overcome the limitations of distance by creating a sense of “presence”—the psychological perception that one is “there” in a remote environment. This is achieved by transmitting rich sensory information (visual, audio, and sometimes touch or motion) between locations, and providing interfaces that allow the user to see, hear, and interact with the remote space almost as naturally as if they were physically present.

Intuitive Surgical Operations is the top patent filer in telepresence technology with 69 patents. The company is followed by Chinese multimedia giant Tencent with 62 patents. Cisco, Sony, Huawei, HP, IBM, ZTE, Google, and Intel are the other prominent players that are among the top 20 assignees in the list.
