Stage one

Two hundred million arrives after the filings

Alumni Ventures, ARK Investment Management and Dynamo put $200M into a Series D. That is the visible event, and it is the last thing that happened. The interesting dates are behind it. Gatik was founded in 2017 and filed its first two patent families in 2019. Three more followed in 2020. By the time capital of this size arrived, the company had already committed, in writing and in public registries, to a specific technical position.

Money is fungible and fast. Priority dates are neither. A filing made in 2019 fixes a date that cannot be bought later at any valuation, and it fixes the wording of what was claimed on that date. So the useful question about this round is not what it funds. It is whether the file underneath it describes the same business the company now says it is in, and whether the claims are narrow enough to mean something.

Stage two

Thirteen granted, three still in the office

Sixteen families since 2019. Thirteen have granted. Three are published and pending, and the first of those could issue at any time. Most early-stage portfolios lean the other way, with a thin granted core and a wide backlog of applications still arguing with examiners. Gatik's balance is inverted. The mass sits on the granted side, filed across EP, US and WO, and grant is what makes a claim enforceable rather than aspirational.

The velocity explains part of it. Two families in 2019, three in 2020, nothing recorded in 2021, then four in 2022, one in 2023, four in 2024, two in 2025. The claims cluster in B60W, vehicle control, and G05D, control of vehicles and robots. Over the last five years those same groups drew 1,694 families from Toyota, 773 from Northwestern Polytechnical University, 735 from Beijing Institute, 720 from Tencent Shenzhen, 679 from Beihang University and 664 from Samsung. Gatik has 16. On any chart drawn to scale, the company is a dot beside those circles.

Count is the wrong measure here, and the picture makes that obvious rather than damning. In a space this dense, breadth is unavailable to everyone. What remains available is specificity: claims written tightly enough around a defined operating problem that they do not collide with a thousand general-purpose filings. Gatik's own description of its work is driverless middle-mile logistics, a narrower operating envelope than autonomy at large. Narrow envelopes are where small files survive.

Citations run outward from the file. NVIDIA appears in 47 citing publications, Kodiak Robotics in 25, May Mobility in 22, Bosch Robert in 16 and Toyota in 16. These are examiners and drafters locating Gatik's disclosures as relevant prior art while writing their own. A sixteen-family portfolio from a company founded in 2017 does not usually accumulate that pattern of attention from a chip designer, two autonomy developers and a tier-one supplier.

That is the strongest available reading of scope. Citation traffic is a third-party judgment about where a claim sits, made by people with no interest in flattering the assignee. It says the 2019 and 2020 work landed somewhere that later work has to route around.
