This report presents a comprehensive essentiality analysis of companies having patents with respect to the H.265 standard. Using a combination of relevant keywords and CPCs, 2000+ distinct patent families related to HEVC technologies were identified.

After an in-depth analysis, 2388 patents were shortlisted that are exclusively related to HEVC.

The analysis covered major HEVC technology areas, including Video Coding, Video Encoding, Video Decoding, Prediction, Filtration, Bitstream, 3D Video Coding, Transformation & Quantization, Multi-layer Video Coding, Block-based Coding, CABAC, and Screen Content Coding. Each patent was assessed through a detailed mapping of its independent claim elements to corresponding sections of the H.265 standard to evaluate technical alignment.

Description

We follow a 4-step process to extract a patent dataset specifically related to HEVC. Starting from thorough research of HEVC documents to the preparation of a detailed taxonomy, filtration of patents through CPCs, discussion dates, and other relevant search strings. Thereby, categorizing each patent based on its relevance and then extracting patent claims for further study.

By following this methodical approach, our team successfully prepared a portfolio comprising approximately 2000+ patents related to HEVC features.

To assess a patent’s essentiality, each claim is manually analyzed by our technical expert team with respect to the HEVC standard to verify whether all claim elements are present. We have classified a patent as potentially essential, potentially non-essential, or medium based on the following criteria:

  • A patent is classified as potentially essential if claim elements align with the HEVC specifications.
  • Conversely, the patent is classified as potentially non-essential if any element is missing or conflicts with the standard, such as contradictory requirements or descriptions.
  • A patent is marked as medium if the main technical aspects are present in the HEVC standard, but some elements are not explicitly defined and can only be reasonably inferred from the identified sections.
